MAYAN RUINS

The ruins of the ancient Maya have drawn adventurous souls for decades—a mystical, beautiful natural world that’s a must-see, must-feel experience during your stay. Visit any of these captivating sites and immerse yourself in a magical journey through time.

TULUM + -

Just a short bike ride from Mezzanine, the Tulum archaeological site holds the distinction of being the most picturesque in the Riviera Maya—and the only one built overlooking the ocean. A visit here offers spectacular views of the Riviera Maya beaches, the Caribbean Sea, and the surrounding coastal region.

COBA + -

The Coba site is a 40-minute drive inland from Tulum and well worth the visit. Unlike most archaeological sites on the Yucatán Peninsula, Coba is surrounded by dense jungle, offering a completely different experience. Bikes are available for rent once inside the site to zoom along jungle paths as you discover pyramids, the ball court, and the observatory.

MUYIL + -

Located 25 km south of Tulum, the Muyil archaeological ruins sit on the inland side of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. This visit can be combined with a tour where you float down an ancient Mayan canal, once used by trading boats that visited the city.

CHICHÉN ITZÁ + -

The most famous of the archaeological sites, Chichén Itzá is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. While the journey is long—about 2.5 to 3 hours each way—it’s well worth it to experience this incredible site. Chichén Itzá reveals the remnants of a dazzling ancient city that was once one of the main centers of the Mayan Empire.

EK-BALAM + -

This lesser-known site, about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from Tulum, is one of our favorites. Don’t miss the wall paintings in the Acropolis building. Only the central area has been excavated so far, so new discoveries are still being made!

EXPLORE TULUM CENOTES

These wondrous natural formations are part of an extensive underground river system, creating crystal-clear freshwater pools through sinkholes in the limestone. Brimming with a quiet, captivating energy, these sacred spaces invite you to swim, snorkel, or dive into their translucent depths.

There is a variety of cenotes to explore, some are open to the sun and others hidden deep within the jungle.  The ancient Maya revered them as gateways to the underworld. Most day tours include a visit to one or two of these serene spots, but if you’re feeling adventurous, you can set out on your own and do a few more. The best cenotes are just a short 10–15-minute drive from the hotel, some further out but worth the time.

SCUBA DIVING AND SNORKELING IN THE MEXICAN CARIBBEAN

Whether you’ve logged hundreds of dives or are just looking to experience going under water, the Tulum area is the perfect place for any water adventure. The Caribbean Sea is teeming with life, home to a colorful array of tropical fish, graceful sea turtles, small reef sharks, and more.

For a different kind of adventure, dive or snorkel in the cenotes—a captivating way to explore the underground caves and river systems that make this region so unique. It’s a beautiful chance to connect with the natural wonders of the Yucatan Peninsula.

SHOPPING IN TULUM

From designer boutiques to local crafts, Tulum offers incredible shopping opportunities perfect for finding unique souvenirs and more. Spend a day browsing the collections of local shop owners to discover the perfect item to commemorate your stay.

Local artisans work with clay, wood, and handmade textiles to create treasures that pay homage to the Mayan people. Choose one or more of these treasures to add to your home’s decor or to give as gifts to the special people in your life.

BIRDWATCHING

You don’t have to leave the comfort of your sun lounger to spot pelicans and seabirds swooping down for a tasty catch—but if you’re an avid bird lover, an excursion is truly worth it. Not far from Mezzanine, the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve unfolds as one of the best places in the world to watch countless species in their natural habitat.

FISHING

The Mayan Riviera is home to some of the best sport fishing in the world. Professional and amateur anglers come from every corner of the globe to fish for grouper, dorado, yellowfin tuna, and marlin.

Charter a fishing boat for an unforgettable family or group fishing adventure, or, for something a little calmer, try your hand at fly fishing in one of the local creeks.

NATURE PARKS

Nature and eco parks are a wonderful way to spend a day in the Tulum and Riviera Maya areas—and a perfect adventure for the whole family. Each park shines a spotlight on a different side of Mexico’s Caribbean beauty.

From exploring ancient Maya ruins and floating down serene waterways to wandering through mysterious cenote caves, every option feels like an explorer’s dream come true.
