INTRODUCTION

Sustainability is something we are committed to as the way we do Hospitality.  We also understand how important it is for discerning travelers to ensure they are a positive addition to their environment with their visit.

For this, we’ve developed two programs that reflect our values and responsibility toward the community and the environment:

Reducing our impact on the environment
Supporting with purpose for a better future

Environment, Social and Governance Program (ESG)

For 20 years, Colibri Boutique Hotels has been at the forefront of caring for and preserving the environment around us. Our philosophy is rooted in gratitude and giving back—to the planet, the people, the environment, and the world we call home.

To help us incorporate this in our daily practices, we are delighted to have Alejandra Cornejo as our full time Social Responsibility Manager. Alejandra is a Biologist (UAM) with multidisciplinary training; in arts and sociology (UNAM). She specialized in Environmental Education and Education for Sustainability and has more than 15 years of experience in this field.

Environment

Conservation and preservation of our natural resources.

Employees

Ensuring a strong work/life balance for our employees.

Guests

Operating with transparency in all we do each day.

Local Community

Placing the welfare of the community in our hotel projects.

ENVIRONMENT

Every year, we participate in and organize at least five cleanups of public beaches, protected natural areas, and streets in Tulum. Many of our cleanups are carried out in collaboration with the Municipality, Public Schools, local Civil Society Organizations, and Friends & Family..

We support the Municipal Program “Kanan Aak” for the Protection and Conservation of Sea Turtles in Tulum. This program patrols the beaches, marks and counts the nests, protects the eggs, and helps the hatchlings reach the sea.

We have installed sorting containers with detailed information for our guests, public areas and offices.  By collecting and later delivering directly to recycling companies, we are able to contribute to significant environmental benefits.

We strive to include initiatives that reinforce the circular economy. One of our best examples is the compost we generate from the bio-waste produced at La Zebra. This compost is used in a garden of local aromatic herbs, which are then used again in the kitchen at La Zebra.

We are committed to the responsible use, sanitation, and sustainability of water. We are also part of the Specialized Working Group on Water Education, Communication, and Culture (GETECCA in Spanish) of Quintana Roo, and we collaborate with local and regional communities to raise awareness about responsible water use practices.

We continuously provide training on environmental regulations and sustainability to our teams and their families.  We coordinate fun activities as a community to get together and share initiative as well as useful information that can be applied at home.

Every celebration is an opportunity to implement sustainability. Therefore, each Children’s Day, we celebrate the sons and daughters of our Colibri Team with gatherings themed around environmental and social impact.

Delighted to be recognized by Conde Nast for our efforts in sustainability. In their honest evaluation they recognized the work of public and private organizations working to find solutions and promote sustainability on all levels in Tulum.

EDUCATION

We actively participate in State and National Environmental Education Forums and give talks and lectures at local and regional schools and universities, encouraging participants to improve their relationship with the environment.

We support and collaborate with local civil society organizations (NGOs) that address environmental issues within the community to strengthen their development.

COMMUNITY

We collect all plastic bottle caps that come to our facilities and donate them to the National Bottle Cap Bank to finance cancer and leukemia treatment for vulnerable children and adolescents.

We are proud to support Teletón, an international organization that provides free therapy to children and adolescents with disabilities. We regularly donate prizes for their silent auctions and galas.

We regularly donate bedding, household items, and school supplies to local organizations that work with vulnerable families, women in situations of violence, and animals living on the streets.

We have local and regional suppliers who preserve customs and traditions, while responsibly interacting with nature and keeping community ties.

This pilot project we support, promotes sustainable organic farming and preserves traditional Mayan agricultural practices. You will find locally sourced organic corn at La Zebra.

See the Story

We incorporate community-sourced products and those derived from environmentally and operationally sustainable practices.

We are ambassadors of Pesca con Futuro, a strong movement that promotes responsible and sustainable consumption of fishery and aquaculture products to ensure the future of fishing and aquaculture, as well as the biodiversity of aquatic species, in Mexico and Latin America.
